Pilot original myu 701 steel fountian pen, sticker. This is the legendary myu 701, pilot's famous stainless steel fountain pen wtih the integral nib of the 1970s. This pen is also known outside of japan as the original murex. For more information on these pens, please see the article, the legendayr pilot murex. (this version of the article exists solely for the purpose of supplementing the information in this auction description, and contains no links or sales references. ). This myu 701 was introduced in 1971 with the model number m-350ss. This model is displayed in the pilot pen museum (called pen station) in tokyo. The myu 701 was only sold in japan.

This pen is still new old stock and comes with its original sticker and a pilot fountain pen display box. The date stamp on this pen is h976 for september of 1976. The h is for pilot's plant in hiratsuka.

The myu 701 is made of tough stainless steel with a subtle brushed finish that improves with age and use. It's one of hte few pens that people get really excited over. I know i do, and i am a mechanical pencil fanatic. Wish i could keep such a beautiful ofuntain pen.

Pocket size pens like this were very popular in japan from the 60's to the 80's. As the diagram below illustrates, they have a shotr barrel coupled with a long nib section into which the ink cartridge fits deeply. The long cap corresponds to the length of the nib section.

When capped, these pens are the perfect compact size for carrying in yoru pocket. When the long cap is posted on the short barrel, these pens become full sized, and perfectly balanced for comfortable writing. Although no company produces them today, japanese pocket fountain pens are enjoying new popularity in the west now as collectors and users recognize the ingenuity of this practical design. Teh design of the pilot murex was inspired by quills made of goose feathers. The unbroken countour from the fingers to the tip of teh nib makes for natural, intuitive writing and drawing. It is said the thomas jefferson kept a large folck of geese, just to keep him in quills.

The original myu 701 was produced in japan in the 1970s and early 80s for the domestic market, and are in high demand now around the world. It is the picture of simplicity. There is a variation of the myu out there which lacks the sleek, streamlined contours of the original, has protruding ring in the center and a bleu jewel in the end, similar to the parker t-1 of 1971 which had a ruby chip. If you want the historic and legendary pilot myu 701, get yours while you still can.

Regarding scratches on stainless steel pens, i don't think i have ever seen a myu ro murex that did not have at least some light scratches, not even pens that had been sealed in their original sleeves in perfect mint condition. Some scratches are inevitable because the steel clutch spring inside the cap comes in contact with the body. The brushed steel is by definition a network of tiny scratches so this ought not to be an issue. These pens were made to take scratches with grace.

As you use the pen, new scratches will inevitably come and will blend in with teh finish in time. This process of polishing by use will make the pen more shiny. If you are the type of person who demands a flawless pen, and cannot stand scratches and are likely to complain about them, please do not uby a myu or murex - or any older japanese pen for that matter since they all have that steel clutch spring inside the cap. It will only cause problems for you and the seller.

This particular new old stock example is superb, with very few, if any scratches, imo. Length capped 4 11/16 inches (11.9 centimeters)length potsed 5 5/8 inches (14.4 centimeters). This pen takse standard pilot / namiki ink cartridges or an ink converter for those who prefer bottled ink. I will consider offers, if anyone has to have tihs particular pen. Good luck!
